Confidence for Kids

As parents, we all want our children to feel happy and secure within themselves and their environment. We want them to feel relaxed and confident and able to cope with circumstances in their day-to-day lives as they grow into young adults but....

Being a child can be tough!

It isn't easy doing the right thing, learning and keeping to what others expect of you, understanding who you are and what's important to you and making the right decisions, let alone fitting in with your peers or standing up for yourself and expressing your needs or ideas.

Children naturally rely on their parents, to provide many of the answers to life’s challenges but we, as parents and adults, know that this simply isn’t always possible. Parenting doesn’t come with an instruction manual and if we ourselves didn’t have particularly strong role models in our own childhood, it can be even more difficult to know how best to lead, particularly when our child is struggling to cope.

Sometimes it can all seem a bit much and children may defend and protect themselves in a way that may result in a loss of motivation, social withdrawal, a negative attitude and poor communication. At times children may feel at odds with everyone and everything as they wrestle with endless “musts and shoulds”. Their own feelings at times can seem ‘forbidden’ to them and this conflict leads to anxiety which may take the form of irrational phobias, stammering, panic attacks, bedwetting, aggression, sleepwalking and sleeplessness and, at its worst, self harm and eating disorders.

As a trained therapist, I have over ten years’ experience in helping children to feel good about themselves. I have helped children to effectively manage and deal with their worries about school exams, peer pressure and bullying, family breakdowns and other home life change, relationship problems, sibling rivalry, bereavement and, feeling misunderstood. I have also helped children to tackle general low self esteem issues like shyness and sensitivity. My aim is always to empower children to discover within themselves a resourcefulness that helps them to develop personally and that enhances their wellbeing.
